What are the differences between Mat Pilates and Reformer Pilates?

Pilates is a popular exercise method that focuses on strengthening the core muscles, improving posture, and increasing flexibility and balance. There are two main types of Pilates: mat Pilates and reformer Pilates. While both forms of Pilates can offer numerous health benefits, there are some key differences between the two.

Mat Pilates:

  • Mat Pilates is a type of Pilates that is performed on a mat, typically with the use of a small equipment such as a ball, resistance band, or magic circle.

  • Mat Pilates classes are generally more affordable than reformer Pilates classes, as they do not require specialized equipment.

  • Mat Pilates is generally more accessible, as it can be done in the comfort of your own home with a mat and a few small pieces of equipment, or in a studio or gym setting with an instructor.

  • Mat Pilates focuses on using your own body weight as resistance, rather than the added resistance provided by the reformer.

  • Mat Pilates exercises may be modified to accommodate different fitness levels and physical abilities.

  • If you are interested, we posted a few mat Pilates videos.  Although we are not there to correct your form, they are great when you have a few minutes to spare, travelling, or can't make it to class.

Reformer Pilates:

  • Reformer Pilates is a type of Pilates that is performed on a specialized piece of equipment called a reformer. This machine consists of a sliding carriage, adjustable springs for resistance, and a variety of handles and straps.

  • Reformer Pilates classes tend to be more expensive than mat Pilates classes, as they require the use of specialized equipment.

  • Reformer Pilates classes are typically conducted in a small group setting, with each participant using their own reformer.

  • Reformer Pilates allows for a wider range of movement and can accommodate people of all fitness levels. The intensity of the workout can be adjusted by adjusting the resistance on the reformer.

  • Reformer Pilates may be more suitable for people with injuries or physical limitations, as the reformer provides support and resistance, allowing for low-impact exercises that may be more difficult or impossible to perform on a mat or other surface.
